Respiratory Depression by Diazepam and Tramadol

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the respiratory depression produced by diazepam and by tramadol.
Ventilatory responses to CO2 was measured in 20 patients(ASA class 1 or 2) before and after the intravenous administration of 0.3 mg/kg of diazepam and 2.5 mg/kg of tramadol.
The mean ventilatory response to C02(mean¡¾l SD) decreased after administration of diazepam or tramadol from 1.86¡¾0.52 to 1.29¡¾0.35 L/min/torr or from 2.09¡¾0.41 to 1.89¡¾0.56 L/min/torr, respectively.
When compared with the control slopes of the ventilatory responses, the drug slope was significantly different in diazepam but not in tramadol. Our results indicate that respiration was depressed after intravenous administration of diazepam, but tramadol did not depress respiration in clinical doses.
